Tusk Blasts Polish President, Opposition as Part of 'Putinist Front'
Tusk claimed that Russia’s strategy towards Poland aimed to achieve five key objectives: weakening the European Union, creating divisions between Poland and Ukraine, turning Poland against Germany, blocking efforts to strengthen Poland’s military, and undermining democratic institutions. He specifically targeted the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party and the far-right Confederation group, linking them to what he described as the pursuit of Putin’s goals.
"Wherever we see Putin’s interests being pursued, we see the people of PiS and Confederation," Tusk said, further implicating Nawrocki, who had been supported by PiS in his presidential campaign last year, in this alignment.
The accusation marks a dramatic escalation in the ongoing institutional battle between Tusk’s pro-European government and Nawrocki, whose presidency has become a stronghold for the conservative opposition since PiS lost power in 2023. Tusk and his allies have repeatedly argued that Nawrocki is using his presidential powers to block government initiatives and maintain aspects of the previous PiS-led administration. Since taking office, Nawrocki has vetoed or delayed several key government measures, including legislation that would enable Poland to access EU defense loans and a bill designed to regulate the cryptocurrency market.
