Warsaw Court Prolongs Pretrial Detention of Nord Stream Suspect
On Monday, the Warsaw District Court extended the suspect’s custody by 40 days, significantly shortening the 100-day period requested by prosecutors.
"The court rejected the prosecutor's request for a 100-day pre-trial detention, instead ordering it for 40 days," the suspect’s lawyer confirmed. The defendant, who remains in custody, has denied any role in the attack.
Volodymyr Z. was apprehended last Tuesday in Pruszków, roughly 15 kilometers west of the Polish capital, under a European arrest warrant issued by German authorities.
Two days after the arrest, the Warsaw court initially authorized a seven-day detention while prosecutors prepared further legal steps.
Piotr Antoni Skiba, spokesperson for the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office, stated that a final decision on extradition to Germany will be made within the statutory 100-day timeframe.
The case is tied to a high-profile international investigation into the September 26, 2022, explosions that crippled the Nord Stream pipelines transporting Russian natural gas to Europe. The underwater blasts occurred near Swedish and Danish waters in the Baltic Sea.
Authorities in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany concluded the incident was the result of intentional sabotage.
