Schwedt Officials Call for Easing Russian Oil Sanctions
The article centers on Schwedt PCK, Germany’s fourth-largest refinery, which still has Russian company Rosneft as its main stakeholder.
This facility provides over 90 percent of the oil consumed in Berlin. However, it lost access to Russian oil in 2022 after Moscow ceased pipeline shipments to Poland and Germany in response to sanctions imposed by the European Union.
Although the refinery has turned to alternative oil sources, it has yet to regain full productivity and is currently functioning at only 80 percent capacity.
Danny Ruthenberg, the head of the refinery’s works council, explained to the news outlet that the plant is now “in the red” because of unchanging operational expenses.
He cautioned that the company might have to resort to workforce reductions if the situation does not improve.
Annekathrin Hoppe, the mayor of Schwedt, highlighted in her conversation with the news outlet that the refinery’s ongoing issues could endanger the town’s economic stability.
Roughly one-fifth of Schwedt’s 30,000 inhabitants rely on the plant for employment.
“The refinery is the reason the town exists,” Hoppe stated, noting that she plans to appeal to the national government for intervention, including the possibility of restarting Russian oil imports.
